Hong Kong Book Fair 2021

Belt and Road Initiative and Youth Development Opportunities

In collaboration with Joint Publishing HK (三聯出版社), we hosted a public symposium about the Belt and Road Initiative and youth development at the Hong Kong Book Fair in July 2021. The Hong Kong Book Fair is one of the largest annual fairs in Asia, with several hundreds of exhibitions that attract nearly a million participants each year. During this event, we invited academics from Hong Kong to engage in a candid exchange of ideas with the authors and editors involved in the "Young People and the Belt and Road: Opportunities and Challenges in Central and Eastern Europe" publication.

Our guests included:

  • Professor Chang Chak Yin – Former Department Head of the Department of Government and Public Administration at Chinese University, expert in international relations in Asia, particularly the relationship of Southeast Asia and China

  • Professor Ho Lok Sang – Professor and Head of the Department of Economics and Director of the Centre for Public Policy Studies at Lingnan University, Hong Kong

  • Ms Susanna Cheung Chui Yung – Hong Kong’s first woman war correspondent and international relations commentator, particularly in the Middle East.

YOUNG PEOPLE AND THE BELT AND ROAD (2020)

Opportunities and Challenges in Central and Eastern Europe

This publication represents our flagship international project. The book focuses on 16 Central and Eastern European countries, including Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Macedonia, Montenegro, Poland, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, and Slovenia. Through contacting local universities, foreign ministries, and even some prime ministers in the CEE countries, we invited more than 33 undergraduate and graduate students from the region to participate. Each country team submitted a manuscript of around 10,000 English words that were reviewed by our Editorial Board.

Each chapter is a report (or country paper) that, in most cases, is divided into five parts: 1) an overview of the political structure of a country, 2) an examination of the political direction of a country, 3) an evaluation of the current opportunities and challenges faced by young people in each respective county, 4) an analysis of the the developmental possibilities and obstacles associated with the Belt and Road Initiative, and 5) recommendations to overcome the barriers involved in the BRI and ways to increase youth involvement in the Initiative.

The book was published in January 2021 in collaboration with Joint Publishing HK (三聯出版社).

YOUNG BELT AND ROAD PUBLICATION (2017)

In summer 2017, the "Belt and Road Initiative and Its Opportunities for the Youth" 《一带一路与青年机遇》 (Chen Xiaofeng & Wang Chenxi Ed.) was published by Zhejiang University Press (ZJU Press). The book is a collection of short essays and other literary pieces from young Chinese students about the BRI.
